
Kats travel to UTEP to start conference play

EL PASO, Texas — The Bearkats open conference play this weekend in El Paso with a three-game series against the UTEP Miners.Â
Sam Houston enters the series with a 14-9 record in preseason play after finishing 14-13 in conference action last season. The Bearkats are 4-3 all-time against UTEP and carry a four-game winning streak in the matchup. Sam Houston swept the Miners last season, including a 2-0 shutout in the second meeting. The Bearkats have not faced UTEP on the road since 2024.Â
Sophia Lundstrom continues to lead the Bearkats at the plate with a .382 batting average and 29 hits. Jordan Peno leads the team in extra-base hits with seven doubles and two triples. Veronica Harrison leads the team with eight home runs, while Bella Perez has a team-high 22 RBIs.Â
The series begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex in El Paso. Game two is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, and the series' finale is set for noon Sunday before the Bearkats return home.Â
